My name is Katherine Williams. I am Alaska Native/Tlingit, Eagle/Wolf clan, born and raised in Yakutat, Alaska. Yakutat is located in Southeast Alaska and has a year-round population of approximately 500–695 residents, with seasonal increases during the summer as visitors arrive to experience the region’s exceptional fishing, camping, surfing, hiking, and access to nearby landmarks such as the Hubbard Glacier and Icy Bay. Growing up, my family was deeply involved in both commercial and subsistence gillnet fishing throughout the summer and fall. We also practiced traditional harvesting, gathering a wide variety of berries and wildflowers for jellies, jams, and syrups; wild celery; and devil’s club for medicinal uses, art, teas, and salves. We also harvested mushrooms and other seasonal foods central to our way of life. During high school, I spent time living in Juneau and later in Washington state. I lived in Brinnon, Washington, attended Quilcene High School, and participated in a small high school program through North Seattle Community College. While at Quilcene High School, I took a brief photography class that sparked my interest in the art form. I currently reside in Anchorage, Alaska, and plan to bring my children home to Yakutat each summer to continue our subsistence lifestyle, practice traditional harvesting, and stay connected with family. The natural beauty of Yakutat has always been an inspiration to me, and it continues to influence my creative journey. I am grateful for the opportunity to share a piece of my home with you.
